what is the NMA Future of Pathology Award?
The Future of Pathology Award was established in 2020 with the goal to recognize and reward students and trainees who have a special interest in the field of Pathology. Applicants may be students ranging from the high school and college levels to medical school, as well as residents and fellows.

2020 Future of Pathology Award Recipients
Ashley PetersonFuture of Pathology Award - Finalist
Ashley Peterson is currently a 2nd year medical school student at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has also completed a Master's of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Eastern Virginia Medical School. She is a licensed Medical Technologist, and prior to starting medical school, worked as a Medical Technologist at UNC Hospitals McLendon Clinical Laboratories for 4 years. It was during her time working as a Medical Technologist, and interacting with Pathologists, that she was inspired to pursue a career in Medicine and specifically Pathology.
Martin Van Burks IV, MD, MBA
Future of Pathology Award - Honorable Mention
Dr. Burks is currently a PGY-2 resident at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia’s School of Medicine and the Darden School of Business with a MD/MBA dual degree. He also obtained a BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. He also completed an internship in general surgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
Dr. Van Burks has completed extensive research and published in the field of tissue engineering and drug delivery. He has a strong research interest in bioinformatics and artificial intelligence, and is the current Graduate Medical Education Council Liaison and the resident representative for the medical device safety board for Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. Dr. Burks was a speaker at this year's NMA meeting, and his lecture was titled “Infrequent Cardiac Findings at Autopsy." |
Tyrel Powell
Future of Pathology Award - Finalist
Tyrel Powell is a rising Senior, majoring in Biology, with a double minor in Chemistry/Psychology from Howard University. During the summer of 2019, Tyrel engaged in clinical shadowing rotations through Medstar Hospitals and affiliates, and also conducted wet-lab research as a Fellow at Georgetown University, as part of the Academy for Research and Clinical Health Equity Scholarship. He is currently also involved in cancer research at Howard University. In addition to his academic pursuits, he is also a Licensed Minister. He has been involved in several service projects working towards youth empowerment and infrastructure development. Tyrel is currently applying to medical school, and is looking forwarding to becoming a Forensic Pathologist. As a Forensic Pathologist, Tyrel hopes be an advocate for justice through medicine, and to be the voice that his patients no longer have.
Ameerah BattlEFuture of Pathology Award
Ameerah Battle is currently a senior at Howard University, studying Biology on the pre-medicine track with a double minor in Chemistry and Sociology. She has had an interest in Forensic Pathology since high school. During the summer of 2018 she interned with the Department of Investigation as a Summer Investigative Intern for Squad 8 Health and Hospitals. During the summer of 2019 she was a Program Analyst at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Washington, D.C. She worked on a government issued research grant entitled “MIMIC,” (Multi-Institutional Multidisciplinary Injury Mortality Investigation in Civilian Pre-Hospital Environment). Ms. Battle has a strong passion for learning, science, and serving her community, and was a speaker at this year’s NMA meeting; her lecture topic was titled “Gun Violence, Trauma, Death, and the Ripple Effect."
